Pressure Scanner vs. Pressure Sensor

Ethernet Intelligent Pressure Scanners
A pressure scanner and a pressure sensor both measure pressure, but they serve different roles in a test system. An individual sensor converts pressure at one point into an electrical signal. A scanner brings measurements from several points into one instrument. WINDTUNER's intelligent pressure scanners integrate multiple pressure sensor modules with data acquisition and communication functions, sending readings from multiple channels to the host computer. The choice depends on how many points the test needs and how the system will collect their data.

Pressure Sensors Provide the Measurement

A pressure sensor responds to pressure and produces a corresponding signal. Before choosing one, check the pressure type, measurement range, output format, and operating environment. An analog output usually needs suitable data acquisition equipment to turn the signal into data that can be recorded and processed. A digital sensor needs a compatible communication interface. Whether a sensor will work with an existing system depends on the model.

Individual sensors can offer flexibility when there are only a few measurement points, when the points are far apart, or when each sensor needs to sit close to its measurement location. As the number of points grows, so does the work of wiring the system, matching channels to locations, and setting up data acquisition. That work is manageable, but it belongs in the equipment decision alongside the sensor specifications.

A Pressure Scanner Collects Data from Multiple Points

Wind tunnel and turbomachinery development tests often require pressure readings at different locations on a model surface or across a test section. Tubing connects each pressure port to the appropriate scanner channel. The instrument then collects and outputs the channel readings. With the channel numbers matched to the measurement locations, the test team can examine the pressure distribution without setting up a complete acquisition unit for every point.

WINDTUNER's intelligent
pressure scanners are used for pressure acquisition on aircraft, aero-engine, and gas-turbine test platforms, as well as in wind tunnel tests. They integrate calibrated pressure sensor modules, with ranges and configurations selected to suit the test. Bringing the channels into one instrument makes their connections easier to organize and allows data to be recorded through measurement and control software.

More Channels Do Not Guarantee Greater Accuracy

A pressure scanner still relies on pressure sensors to make its measurements. It is therefore too simple to say that a scanner is more accurate than a sensor. The results depend on the measurement range, calibration, operating environment, and pneumatic connections. Range selection matters especially when the test involves small pressure changes: an unnecessarily wide range may make those changes harder to resolve. Accuracy specifications also need to be compared on the same basis and under the stated conditions.

When tubing connects the pressure ports to the acquisition equipment, its length, internal diameter, and sealing can affect the measurement. For rapidly changing pressure signals, check whether the tubing and acquisition system can provide the required response. Adding channels does not remove that requirement. If the test needs synchronized data, confirm that the equipment configuration supports the required timing.

Choose Around the Test Requirements

Start with the number of measurement points and the type of pressure to be measured, then define the range and acquisition requirements. Consider where the equipment will sit, how the tubing will be routed, and which software will receive the data. Existing sensors and acquisition hardware may still be suitable if they meet the test requirements. For a test that calls for centralized pressure acquisition, review the scanner's channel configuration and interfaces.

A
pressure scanner brings the functions needed for multichannel pressure measurement into one instrument, making it easier to connect and use. WINDTUNER can match a pressure scanner and supporting measurement and control solution to the point layout, pressure range, and test-system configuration. Clarifying those requirements early helps identify suitable equipment and reduces repeated changes to connections and settings later.
